After Albi (France) in 2017 and before Poznan (Poland) in 2019, the UCI Gran Fondo 2018 was awarded to Varese (Italy).
The event will take place on the same routes as the Tre Valli Varesine, along Lake Maggiore, Lake Varese and Lake Lugano. A pure delight for the 2500 cyclists of 50 nationalities…

Day 1: Monday August 27th
Group: Arrival at Milano Malpensa airport and transfer to your hotel.

Our guide will meet you at Milano Malpensa Airport around 11:00am and a private coach will then take you to your hotel: 4* Capolago in Varese.
Varese is a city and commune in north-western Lombardy, northern Italy, 55 kilometers (34 mi) north of Milan.
It is the capital of the Province of Varese. The hinterland or urban part of the city is called Varesotto.
The city of Varese lies at the feet of Sacro Monte di Varese, part of the Campo dei Fiori mountain range that hosts an astronomical observatory, as well as the Prealpino Geophysical Centre. The village which is in the middle of the mountain is called Santa Maria del Monte because of the medieval sanctuary, which is reached through the avenue of the chapels of the Sacred Mountain. Varese is situated on seven hills and looks over Lake Varese.

The Hotel Capolago vaunts a unique location offering 4* hotel. Malpensa Airport is not far away and the centre of the prestigious town of Varese is just on the doorstep. The top quality lakeside hotel has been recently refurbished and provides new 4* rooms designed to an extremely high standard, creating a modern ambiance to complement the enigmatic landscape of the surrounding Lombard region of Italy.
Our 4* hotel is the perfect residence and departure point for exploring the beautiful region surrounding Lake Varese: the Alpine foothills and the Italian and Swiss lakes.
Once you have checked in, our staff members will help you adjust your bikes before going for a short test ride. In the evening, we will gather over a welcoming cocktail, before enjoying our first meal. This will be the occasion for everyone to get to know each other and for our staff to present to you the program that is expecting you in the coming days.
Day 2: Tuesday, August 28th
Group: Reconnaissance part 1 of Sunday’s route
Hotel: 4* Capolago in Varese
Today will start with breakfast before our first training session.
We will leave the hotel by bike and scout the first half of Sunday’s route. The long route will cover 130 km while the short route will cover 103 km. We will ride approximately 75 km (46, 6 miles).
In the afternoon, you will have some time off. You can take on the opportunity to relax at the hotel, concentrate on your training or go on a scouting tour of the hotel’s surrounding and of Varese. Our staff will be at your disposal and happy to guide you.
Varese is home to the Sacro Monte di Varese (‘the sacred mountain of Varese’), a place of pilgrimage and worship. It is one of the Sacri Monti of Piedmont and Lombardy, included on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
Varese is rich in castles, many once pertaining to the Borromeo family. The historic center of the city includes the Praetorian Palace and Villa Cagna, a residential complex that also hosts the Civic Music School of Varese. After the 19th century, it was enriched by villas and their surrounding gardens; many now open to visitors.
- Villa Recalcati in Casbeno was built in the early 18th century, enlarged during 1756–77, and was once a luxury hotel. It now houses the offices of the Province of Varese and the Prefecture.
- Villa Toeplitz, in the locality Sant’Ambrogio stands, with a large public park. The complex is named after Giuseppe Toeplitz (1866-1938), Polish-born banker who bought it in 1914. Already modest country residence of the German family Hannesen, was enlarged by Toeplitz after World War II when his wife Hedwig Mrozowska and his son Louis sold it to brothers Mocchetti of Legnano. The complex with the elegant Italian park passed to the Municipality of Varese in 1972.
- Villa Ponti were built between 1850 and 1870 by Milanese architect Giuseppe Balzaretto (1801-1874) for Andrea Ponti. In 1976, it was converted into a convention center. The main building, surrounded by a public park, is decorated internally by Giuseppe Bertini (1825-1898). Part of the complex, Villa Fabio Ponti is a neoclassical-style villa housed in 1959 headquarters for Garibaldi.

Day 3: Wednesday, August 29th
Group: Reconnaissance part 2 of Sunday’s race
Hotel: 4* Capolago in Varese
As we did yesterday, we will use this morning to finish the reconnaissance of Sunday’s route.
We will leave the hotel by bus to reach a given point on the race’s route.
After the ride, our bus will take us back to the hotel. You will then have the afternoon off.
Additional training sessions can also be scheduled on a daily basis (to be arranged with our staff on site).
Day 4: Thursday, August 30th
Group: Individual Time Trial
Hotel: 4* Capolago in Varese
Today marks the first day of the championship! The event will start with the Individual Time Trial (22 km – 13.6 miles).
After an early breakfast, we will head by bike to the Varese Ippodroma, where the start will be given. Our staff members will be on hand to assist you and help you prepare yourself for the race and assist you throughout the day.
The award ceremony with the presentation of the World’s Champions Jerseys and medals will take place in the late afternoon.
For those interested in it, we will arrange massages at the hotel.
If you are not taking part in today’ s race, you will have the day off, to either stroll through Varese, visit one of the many attractions of the town or simply take it easy at the hotel.
Day 5: Friday, August 31st
Group: Team Relay Race
Hotel: 4* Capolago in Varese
The team relay race will take place today in the late afternoon.
For those taking part in the relay race, we’ll take advantage of the day to do final adjustments and prepare ourselves to the best. Today again, our staff will be available to assist you and cheer you on.
Day 6: Saturday, September 1st
Group: Short cycling ride or time off
Hotel: 4* Capolago in Varese
Today will be our last chance to go on a last short reconnaissance ride before tomorrow’s race. We will leave the hotel by bike with our staff. Our mechanic will be available to make the final adjustments.
If you prefer, you will also be free to either relax at the hotel or take some time off from the group and visit the area on your own.
The entire group will be free to have lunch at its convenience.
For those interested in it, we will arrange massages at the hotel and in the evening, the dinner will be served at the hotel.
Day 7: Sunday, September 2nd
Group: Race
Hotel: 4* Capolago in Varese
Today is the D-day!
After an early breakfast, we will head by bus to the start of today’s race. You will be part of the privileged ones who will be able to ride to the start.
During the race, we will have our private feeding station with energy drinks, bars, fruits, etc…
Before the start, our staff will be on hand to help you with your preparation, your bike or anything else you may need. And they will assist you the entire day.
After the last rider has crossed the finish line, we will head back to the hotel.
Upon arriving at the hotel, you will be free to relax or to pamper yourself with a massage (upon request) before getting ready for a celebration evening.
Day 8: Monday, September 3rd
Group: Departure and transfer to Milano Malpensa Airport
This last morning, you will enjoy breakfast with a multitude of images in your mind.
Soon, it will be time to say goodbye. Your guides will be available to help you, should you have any question or request, and to wish you a nice trip back home. Alternatively, if you’d like to extend your stay, we will be happy to make arrangements for you.
